NUFS MA TESOL Task page
This summer (August 2018) I'm again teaching an intensive course on "Positive Psychology in English Language Teaching in the MA TESOL program at the Nagoya University of Foreign Studies. This page is for students taking that course. At the end of each day, you need to reflect on the day's topics and activities on the class moodle. You also need to do a task from this page. We use use the content the next day.
There are 3 pages in the NUFS MA TESOL part of this website.

The readings page
A page with an extra reading
Want an intro to the subject? HERE is a quick video introducing Positive Psychology.
(Note to people not on the course -- the links on this page are still worthwhile and you are welcome to use them.)
Before the course, please read Happiness in ESL/EFL, a chapter I wrote for a book that was published April,2016.
Here is chapter Teach like a positive psychologist from a book published, April 2015. There are similarities to the 2016 book chapter but most of the activities are different. You don't have to read it but it is here as a resource if you want it. There is another chapter, Jobs, careers and calling: Adapting positive psychology tasks HERE
If you want to expand your background on positive psychology before the course, here are a couple books you might want to read. The library at NUFS (in the downtown building where our class meets) has copies.
Positive Psychology: Theory, research & applications by Hefferon and Boniwell. Probably the best intro textbook I've read.
Introducing Postive Psychology by Grenvile-Cleave. I usually dislike really basic books (idiot's guides/ for dummies, etc.) But this one is written by someone who knows what she is talking about. Recommended if you want a good overview in an hour or two.
Also see the library pos_psych_helgesen_july.pdfpages of this site.

Day 1: The VIA (Values In Action) Survey.
Discover your "Signature Strengths" with this VIA (Values in Action) survey. There are 240 questions so this will take a while.Don't "overthink" your answers. Your first impression is fine.
You can take the survey in English at Martin Seligman's Authentic Happiness site. Choose "VIA Survey of Character Strengths" under "Questionnaires." You'll need to register (It is free. Don't worry about getting junk email. I registered over 10 years ago and have never gotten a mail from them. Note that you can take the test in either English or Japanese (or several other languages). For Japanese students, you really might want to consider doing the Japanese one. It is quite long. It is good, but not real exciting.
Whichever one your decide to take, please print out (or copy) your top five strengths.
You don't need to write all the extra information. Just the strengths. We'll use them in class tomorrow.
If you want to read up on the strengths before class, HERE is a list with explanations. As you do, think about your students. In general, what are their strengths? Are there areas you want to help them work on?
Day two: Martin Seligman on PERMA
Martin Seligman, University of Pennsylvania, former president of the American Psychological Association and founder of the Positive Psychology movement has a model of well-being called PERMA.
Positive Emotion
Engagement
Relationships
Meaning (or Meaningfulness)
Accomplishment
Below is a short (25 minute) lecture he did at "Thinkers in Residence" in Adelaide, Australia. Please watch it. We'll be looking at ways to connect PERMA with our ELT classes tomorrow.

Day three: Tal ben-Shahar videos
Tal ben-Shahar taught the largest class at Harvard, a positive psychology course. Here you can watch an interview divided into 13 short topics. Choose at least two that are interesting for you. Be ready to summarize them in class tomorrow.
(If you want to watch the whole interview, great. It is only about 30 minutes).
